I would like to know more about ETF

I'm a new investor and I would like to know more about ETF. would it be appropriate to buy one?

Thierry's terse response is of course correct. If you don't know about any instrument, you shouldn't buy it.

That said, an ETF can be a good way to diversify your account by buying a basket of stocks.

My fav ETF family is at http://sectorspdr.com. There's lots of good info there. Spend an hour on that site and then come back with questions. When I trade ETFs, I almost always trade one of those 9 ETFs on SectorSpdr.com or SPY, QQQ, DIA, IWM. Those are the only ETFs you really need. (And maybe a little SH if you don't trade options.)
